Jessup Applications Due Friday!

Jessup Applications Due Friday!

The Jessup International Law Moot Court team is accepting applicants for the 2020-2021 team! Jessup is the largest moot court competition in the world with nearly 700 participating schools from 100 nations. The Competition is a simulation of a fictional dispute between countries before the International Court of Justice, the judicial organ of the United Nations. See the Jessup website for more information: https://www.ilsa.org/about-jessup/. The team travels to a regional competition (likely Portland or Denver) in Spring 2021, and then, hopefully, to Washington, D.C. to compete in the World Championships in April.

ASU has had success in this competition and is the reigning Portland Regional Champion for the second-year in the row. Sadly, the team was unable to compete at the World Championships this year due to Covid-19. This year’s team included four 3Ls who will be graduating. Therefore, the team is looking to fill four spots for the upcoming year.

Any interested 1L or 2L students must send their resume, and a brief letter of interest (no more than 1 page) to Rob Gordon (rob.gordon1@gmail.com) and Amanda Newman (amandanewman@asu.edu) by Friday, April 24. Zoom interviews will be conducted on the weekend of May 8 (after finals). If you have any concerns or difficulties with this timeline but would still like to apply, please let us know. We understand and are more than willing to work with you! Transcripts are not required, but please include your 1L legal writing grade(s). Please also highlight any prior public speaking experience and/or interest in public international law (however, neither are necessary).

Although we do not have information on next years problem, this year’s problem explored: head of state responsibility for war crimes; legality of autonomous killer robots; state succession of treaties; and multi-forum litigation in international law. We will update this posting when the 2020-2021 problem subjects are released.

If you have any questions about the team, competition, or application process, please email Emiley Pagrabs (epagrabs@asu.edu).
