CAREER SERVICES: Washington Council of Lawyers – 2020 Summer Pro Bono & Public Interest Forum goes virtual!

CAREER SERVICES: Washington Council of Lawyers – 2020 Summer Pro Bono & Public Interest Forum goes virtual!

For over 20 years, Washington Council of Lawyers has held a Summer Pro Bono & Public Interest Forum, that brings together summer associates and summer interns from law firms, government agencies and legal services organizations, highlights public service opportunities, and demonstrates a strong commitment to using your law degree pro bono publico, for the public good. Our Summer Forum has become a tradition and is a staple of many summer programs.

Today, lawyers and law students alike are clamoring for opportunities to put their legal training to work helping their communities recover from COVID-19. So this year’s Summer Forum will explore both the impending access to justice crisis brought on by the current health crisis and the traditional paths to meaningful pro bono & public-interest careers.

We are pleased to present our first-ever virtual Summer Forum. The event kicks off on Tuesday, July 7, at 12:00 pm with a keynote conversation featuring D.C. Court of Appeals Chief Judge Anna Blackburne-Rigsby. Register here.

n a dialogue led by Jim Sandman, President Emeritus of the Legal Services Corporation, and Chair of the American Bar Association’s Covid-19 Task Force, Chief Judge Blackburne-Rigsby will discuss the importance of pro bono service in her own legal career, speak to the challenges of court operations during the current pandemic, and highlight the critical need for pro bono and public-interest lawyers in advancing access to justice.

Then, from 12-1 pm on each Tuesday and Thursday from July 9-23, you will be invited to attend 5 practice-area-specific Summer Forum panels. The panels will explore in-person, remote, and socially-distanced pro bono opportunities in these areas:

  • Civil Rights & Civil Liberties
  • Poverty Law
  • Human Rights & Immigration
  • Transactional & Non-litigation Practice
  • Criminal Law & Death Penalty

Each panel will include both local DC and national practitioners, so lawyers and law students from across the country will benefit from attending.

Your Summer Forum ticket provides access to the keynote and all 5 panels.  Tickets cost $55 for law firm lawyers & summer associates; $35 for public-interest & government lawyers & summer interns; $30 for law students; and $25 for members. (Join Washington Council of Lawyers now to receive the discounted member rate.)

Our Summer Forum is perfect for all lawyers and law students who want to help with the legal recovery post-COVID and the resulting legal needs for years to come.
