Career Services – Reed Smith “Let’s Talk” CLE Series

Session 1: Let’s talk bias busting and microaggressions

Bias manifests itself in several ways in workplaces. It impacts our interactions with others, decision making abilities, and most of our basic business systems. These biases, if left unchecked, can be disastrous to workplace cultures. In this interactive workshop, attendees will learn practical skills to assess and interrupt bias, avoid microaggressions, and cultivate a culture of inclusion.

Session 2: Let’s talk privilege and allyship
Date: July 20, 2022 / 2 p.m. ET

Understanding the dynamics of power and privilege are essential to allyship. In this workshop, participants will learn tools to identify their privileges, and strategies to use those privileges to advocate for those in the workplace that do not have them.

Session 3: Let’s talk building and developing diverse teams
Date: September 8, 2022

Research shows that diverse and inclusive teams are more productive and innovative. This is particularly true in the legal industry, where resolving client matters often requires unique perspective and a think outside the box approach. However, simply throwing together a diverse team is not enough to reap the benefits of diverse perspectives and ideas. It requires inclusion and equitable practices. In the session, attendees will learn strategies to build truly diverse and inclusive teams.

Session 4: Let’s talk gender, sex, identity and equity
Date: December 8, 2022

Despite attempts to address bias and inequity in the workplace, gender inequity continues to be a pressing issue in the legal profession. Current efforts to remedy the gender gap focus almost exclusively on the challenges cisgender (meaning, individuals who identify with the biological sex assigned at birth) women face. Yet research continues to show that transgender and nonbinary people face structural barriers, biases, and discrimination at work because of their gender identity. In this workshop, attendees will learn how gender stereotypes and work structures negatively influence work experiences, practices, and policies, and adopt strategies to foster gender equity.
