Reed Smith – What I Wish I Knew Then: A Conversation With our Women Attorneys

Join Reed Smith for the fifth webinar in our Diversity, Equity & Inclusion series. “What I Wish I Knew Then” will feature a panel discussion led by Christina Shea, the Global Chair of our Women’s Initiative Network (WINRS), and Dana Alvaré, Reed Smith’s Global Gender Equity Advisor. Our panelists will share stories about their individual career paths to Big Law and the lessons they have learned along the way—all with the goal of helping you successfully navigate campus recruiting and launch your legal career. After the panel, we will host several small group sessions, allowing you to connect with our attorneys and your peers in a more informal setting. Career Talk: Legislative Careers on Capitol Hill

Interested in legislative careers working on a House or Senate Committee, or a Representative or Senator’s office on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.? Want to learn more about what working in Congress entails, and how you can use your law degree in this field?

ASU Law alumna Katherine Nikas will be speaking to law students on Friday, April 9 from 12:15 to 1:15pm Eastern (9:15 to 10:15am Arizona time) via Zoom about her career working both for an individual representative’s office and on Congressional committees. She will also answer any questions you may have. Please see Ms. Nikas’ bio below.

Katherine Nikas is the Deputy Chief Counsel for Senator Lindsey O. Graham, U.S. Committee on the Judiciary, where she handles the national security, tech, and immigration portfolio. Previously, she was the Chief Counsel for Immigration and Visa Security for then-Chairman Graham where she managed the policy portfolio on an array of immigration issues including border security, transnational criminal organizations and migrant smuggling, legal immigration, and visa security. For the three years prior, she worked as an investigative counsel in the oversight and investigations unit for then-Chairman Charles Grassley. In that role, she investigated security challenges and tracked fraud trends relating to federal agencies with a national security function, including the Department of Justice, the Department of State, and the Department of Homeland Security. From 2020-2021, Katherine was a Government Advisor to the Department of Defense, Defense Science Board. In addition to her time on Capitol Hill, she worked as a judicial law clerk for the Honorable John C. Gemmill of the Arizona Court of Appeals, and served as an Assistant Attorney General in the Arizona Attorney General’s Office. Katherine holds a B.A. and J.D. from Arizona State University.

A Day in the Life of an EPA General Counsel Attorney

Interested in learning about the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)? 

The EPA’s Office of General Counsel is the chief legal advisor to EPA, the federal agency with primary responsibility for implementing the nation’s environmental laws. OGC attorneys provide counsel to EPA policymakers on legal issues associated with implementing these environmental laws, as well as the laws governing the day-to-day operations of a federal agency.  

Want to learn more? The OGC is hosting a virtual information session on March 24th for ASU Law students. A few OGC attorneys will fill in details about “a day in the life of” their particular practice, and the recruitment office will answer any questions regarding the Summer Honors and Externship Programs and hiring process.
